Major Thomas Shields, U.S. Marine Corps
MEPS Command - Reflections on Memorial Day
Major Shields has a BS in Criminology from EMU and a Master of Professional Studies in Homeland Security from the University of Connecticut. He earned his commission at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.
Thomas was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served with Multi-National Security Transition Command.
His military awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and service medals and ribbons.
He will share with us the importance of continuing to observe Memorial Day.

Bob Kenning, SMC Member - Volunteering for Nonprofit Boards: Building Stronger Community
he first speaker is Wayne State Professor Marc Fruman, the Director of the University's Center for the Study of Citizenship and co-author of the "Michigan Civic Health Index". His research on citizen involvement in a community's civic and political life has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Mellon Foundation.
The second speaker is SMCB Member Robert "Bob" Kenning. Bob spent a lifetime serving the community both as Birmingham's City Manager and as a Board member or officer of numerous nonprofits, including the Birmingham Rotary. Bob's accomplishments earned him distinguished service awards from a range of organizations from the National Recreation Association to the Michigan Local Government Management Association
