John Ogrodnick, former Detroit Red Wings Star

John Ogrodnick played 8 years for the Detroit Red Wings and a total of 14 years in the NHL.  He was one of the most dangerous goal scorers in the league. 

 

During the 1984-85 season, he scored 55 goals (3rd best in the league) and 105 points.  John was voted an All Star a total of five times and once to the first team. 

 

His 827 points included 402 goals spanning 928 NHL games.

                            The Detroit Urban Debate League

John Lawson, the Detroit Urban Debate League's Executive Director, helped found the League in 2009.  The group now involves 250  debaters from 18 urban high Schools.  Lawson also played a key role in forming the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues. 

 

The speaker was a high school and collegiate debater.  After practicing law, he taught Government at Southfield/Lathrup H. S..  He then spent 25 years as Chairman of the Social Sciences Department at Birmingham's Groves H.S. and served as Groves' debate coach.  His debate teams won numerous national and state championships, including a team being judged the top debate team in the U.S.  Lawson has taught at five different university debate institutes.  The speaker earned his BA from the University of Michigan and his JD from Michigan's Law School.
