Tom Leonard, Speaker, Michigan House of Representatives
Successes and Failures of Current Legislative Session

State Representative Tom Leonard was first elected to serve the 93rd District in the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2012. The 93rd District encompasses Clinton County and portions of Gratiot County.

Leonard earned his Bachelor’s degree in History and Spanish from the University of Michigan.  Tom received his Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University College of Law and was the Graduating Class President. He also received the Ralph M. Freeman Scholarship which is annually awarded to the student that most exemplifies the Rules of Professional Conduct by treating others with courtesy and respect.

 

Prior to elected office, Tom served as an Assistant Attorney General, and as a prosecutor for Genesee County, where he prosecuted some of Michigan’s most dangerous criminals while assigned to the Special Crimes Division in Flint.

 

In January 2014, Rep. Leonard was elected by his colleagues to serve as the Speaker Pro Tempore which is second in line behind the Speaker of the House, he also chaired the House Insurance Committee.  In November 2016, Rep. Leonard was selected to serve as Speaker of the House by his colleagues for the 2017-2018 term.   

 

Tom and his wife Jenell live in DeWitt Township with their daughter, Hannah, who was born in September 2016.
